EMT Certification and Recertification


Description

To become a Certified EMT or to recertify an existing EMT Certification follow the below instructions.

To Qualify

As of July 1, 2010 all initial and recertification for EMTs are required to have a Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Live Scan background check.
 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INITIAL EMT APPLICANTS
To be certified as an EMT in the State of California by Sacramento County you must complete and submit the following:
  1. Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency (SCEMS) EMT Application.
  2. Current and valid National Registry EMT - Basic card and Certificate.
  3. Current and valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider card meeting 2005 American Heart Association standards or equivalent.
  4. Government issued photo identification.
  5. Notice of Disciplinary Causes--signature required.
  6. Completed DOJ and FBI Live Scan Request Form, BCII 8016.
  7. Instruction for Completing Request for Live Scan Service Applicant Submission Form- Signature Required

WE DO NOT PERFORM FINGERPRINTING IN OUR OFFICE FOR LIVE SCAN

Application approval times vary depending on the Live Scan processing times.


INSTRUCTIONS FOR CURRENT EMT RECERTIFICATION - CURRENT EMTs OR WITHIN SIX MONTHS
To be recertified as an EMT in the State of California by Sacramento County  you must complete and submit the following: 
  1. Sacramento County Emergency Medial Technician (EMT) Recertification Application.
  2. As of July 1, 2010 all EMTs recertifying are required to have submitted to a Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Live Scan background check.
  3. Twenty-four (24) hours of Continuing Education hours or an approved EMT Refresher Course.
  4. Skills competency verification form, EMSA-SCV (08/10), with original signatures. This form MUST be the current 08/10 version to be accepted.
  5. Government issued photo identification.
  6. Current and valid CPR for the Healthcare Provider card or equivalent.
  7. DOJ and FBI Live Scan Request Form BCII 8016 for an EMT that has not previously submitted to a Live Scan background request for certification or recertification as an EMT in Sacramento County.
  8. Current or expired (within 6 months) California State EMT card.
  9. Notice of Disciplinary Causes--signature required. 
  10. Instruction for Completing Request for Live Scan Service Applicant Submission Form- Signature Required
INTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED SIX TO TWELVE MONTHS
  1. All of the above.
  2. Additional 12 Continuing Education hours (total 36).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED TWEVE TO 24 MONTHS
  1. All of the above.
  2. Additional 12 Continuing Education hours (total 48).
  3. Apply for and receive your National Registry EMT – Basic card.
  4. Submit to a DOJ and FBI Live Scan background check.
  5. Fees increase to initial certification cost of $100 total.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMT EXPIRED OVER 24 MONTHS
  1. Complete an EMT Course.
  2. Apply for and receive your National Registry EMT – Basic card.
  3. Submit to a DOJ and FBI Live Scan background check.
  4. Follow Initial EMT process.

Cost

For EMT Certification - cash only/exact amount.

  • ​Non-refundable SCEMS application fee of $25.00.
  • Non-refundable State of California Emergency Medical Services Agency EMT Central Registry fee of $75.00.

For EMT Recertification - cash only/exact amount.

      •​  Non-refundable SCEMS application fee of $25.00, and

  • Non-refundable $37.00 State of California recertification fee for an EMT that previously submitted to a Live Scan background check for the purpose of certification or recertification as an EMT with Sacramento County, or
  • Non-refundable $75.00 State of California EMT Central Registry fee for an EMT that has not previously submitted to a Live Scan background check for the purpose of certification or recertification as an EMT with Sacramento County.
