The term meaningful use of health information technology was introduced in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) of 2009, with the objective of reduced health care cost, improved healthcare quality and improved population health. The driver is financial incentives for using healthcare information technology. To receive payments, eligible providers and eligible hospitals must use a certified electronic health record (EHR) for purposes including but not limited to exchange of coded data and quality reports, e-prescribe and radiology reports.
